Summer Camp for Children with Health Issues in Harrisonburg, VA
If your child suffers from a severe chronic health condition such as epilepsy, Asperger’s syndrome, Tourette syndrome, neurofibromatosis, sickle cell anemia, diabetes, congenital heart disease, heart conditions that require pacemakers, ICDs or transplants, Down syndrome, hemiplegia or childhood obesity, you know how hard it can be to make them feel like they are just a regular kid. One summer camp wants to change that.
The Brainy Camps Association was formed as a subsidiary of Children’s National Medical Center with the objective of allowing children with severe chronic health conditions to enjoy summer camp, just like other children.
“Brainy Camps Association is a non-profit organization that provides residential summer camps, family retreats, leadership training and transitional youth programs for children with severe chronic health conditions. We began our mission in 1994 with a camp for children with epilepsy.”
The campsite is located in Harrisonburg, VA, at the Massanetta Springs Camp and Conference Center, just a few minutes from Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Physicians and nurses specializing in the health conditions are on-site 24/7. Transportation is also available from the Washington, D.C. area, making it easy for local children to be involved. But it isn’t just locals that are invited, children nationwide come to the camps to interact with other kids with similar conditions and backgrounds, often for the first time in their life.
No child should forgo the childhood rite of passage that is summer camp, no matter what their health condition is. Brainy Camps gives children the opportunity to enjoy their week of summer freedom and participate in things like swimming, fishing, boating, archery, arts & crafts, pottery, team sports, challenge course and camp Olympics.
If your child has a severe chronic health condition, or you know a child that does, check out Brainy Camps.
